The Town Park has approx.170 hectares of open space; & has a variety of areas to explore from play areas to formallandscaped gardens (Maxell Gdn) and grassy banks, pools and woodlands. This environment evolved through human impact on the land over many years. From an area that was part of the industrial revolutionary heartland of Shropshire, it has transformed into a unique example of formal & natural beauty, for everyone to enjoy.
Valuable raw materials i.e. coal and ironstone were mined, which produced enormous amounts of waste creating the pit mounds seen in the park today ( e.g. Spout Mound).
The Shropshire Canal also passed through the area, which is now the Park.
New industries grew up : iron furnaces, foundries and forges at Hinkshay and at the Stirchley Chimney. Most belonged to the "Old Park Company" originally set up by Isaac Hawkins Browne - who lived at Stirchley Grange.
The "Wellington Iron and Coal Co." built Stirchely Chimney in 1873; but due to bankruptcy in 1877, it was never used
It was bought by the Wrekin Chemical Company in 1886 and used to manufacture naphtha charcoal and lime salts until the locals complained about the smell!
